A historic city with limited space and growing delivery demand

Heidelberg’s compact urban form is one of its greatest strengths, but also one of its biggest logistics challenges. Narrow medieval streets, a two-kilometre pedestrian zone and limited curbside space leave little room for delivery vehicles, while increasing e-commerce and service traffic place additional pressure on the city’s transport network.
Loading zones are often occupied illegally, forcing delivery drivers to stop on pavements, cycle lanes or at intersections, creating congestion and safety risks.
NEXTLOGIC helps Heidelberg build on its existing planning tools and open data infrastructure while introducing new digital solutions that support better management of urban freight and public space.

The NEXTLOGIC pilot

Building on the experience gained in The Hague and Wrocław, Heidelberg adapts both Smart Loading Zones and Mobile Microhubs to its own urban context. The pilot implements a digital curbside management system integrating real-time monitoring and demand-based allocation of loading and unloading zones, while a Mobile Microhub enables goods to be transferred to electric cargo bikes for the final stage of deliveries. The city’s Digital Twin integrates mobility, logistics and curbside information into a single planning environment, allowing planners to simulate different scenarios, monitor operations and evaluate impacts before wider deployment.
Alongside these technical solutions, Incentives & Rewards mechanisms support operator participation, encourage the uptake of e-cargo bikes and facilitate more sustainable last-mile deliveries.
