What is NEXTLOGIC?
NEXTLOGIC (Next-Generation Urban Freight Logistics for
Net-Zero Emissions through Innovative Solutions) is a four-year Horizon Europe project supporting cities in their transition to climate neutrality by rethinking how urban space, mobility and logistics are planned and managed.
By combining Digital Twins, eXtended Reality (XR), and advanced data analytics, the project enables cities to design, test, and implement innovative solutions for managing urban space and transport more efficiently. The project brings together cities, industry, researchers, and citizens to co-create solutions that balance the needs of logistics, mobility, and urban life, supporting the transition towards climate-neutral cities by 2030.
The challenge
Urban transport is responsible for a significant share of emissions, congestion, and pollution in European cities. While much attention has been given to passenger mobility, urban freight logistics remains under-addressed, despite its growing impact on urban space and sustainability. Cities face increasing pressure to:
- Engage stakeholders in complex decision-making processes
- Reduce emissions and environmental impact
- Manage limited urban space more efficiently
- Integrate freight and passenger mobility
NEXTLOGIC addresses these challenges by enabling cities to plan and manage mobility and logistics in an integrated, data-driven way.
Our approach
NEXTLOGIC provides a collaborative and digitally empowered framework to redesign urban mobility and logistics systems.
At its core is a powerful platform that allows cities to:
- Monitor and analyse mobility and logistics flows in real time
- Simulate future scenarios using Digital Twins
- Engage stakeholders through immersive XR environments
- Co-design solutions tailored to local needs
This approach supports cities in reallocating urban space,
optimising transport flows, and reducing emissions, while
improving accessibility and quality of life.

Key innovations
NEXTLOGIC combines advanced digital tools with practical,
real-world solutions to transform how cities plan and manage
urban logistics and mobility.
Digital tools
NEXTLOGIC develops a suite of integrated tools that support
data-driven, participatory decision-making:

Digital Twin (DT)
Real-time, data-driven models of cities that allow simulation, monitoring and optimisation of mobility and logistics systems.

eXtended Reality (XR)
Immersive virtual and augmented environments enabling stakeholders to visualise, test and co-design urban interventions.

Advanced data analytics & visualisation
Tools to collect, process and analyse mobility and logistics data, providing actionable insights through intuitive dashboards and geospatial visualisations.
Innovative solutions
Building on these tools, NEXTLOGIC co-designs and demonstrates concrete solutions in cities:

Mobile microhubs
Flexible, zero-emission hubs enabling efficient and sustainable last-mile delivery using e-cargo bikes and electric vehicles.

Smart loading and unloading zones
Dynamic curbside management systems that optimise space usage and reduce congestion and emissions.

15-minute multimodal hubs
Integrated urban nodes combining mobility and logistics services to improve accessibility and support more liveable neighbourhoods.

Incentive and reward mechanisms
Gamification and behavioural strategies encouraging citizens and operators to adopt more sustainable mobility and logistics practices.

Electrification of urban logistics
Solutions supporting the deployment and optimisation of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure in urban environments.
Impact
NEXTLOGIC contributes to building cleaner, smarter, and more liveable cities by delivering:
- Reduced emissions and improved air quality
- More efficient use of urban space
- Better integration of freight and passenger mobility
- Increased adoption of zero-emission solutions
- Stronger collaboration between public and private stakeholders
The project supports the EU objective of achieving
100 climate-neutral cities by 2030, providing scalable
and replicable solutions across Europe.
Pilots across Europe
NEXTLOGIC solutions are co-developed and tested in eight diverse European cities, ensuring adaptability across different urban contexts. From large metropolitan areas to medium-sized cities, these pilots demonstrate how innovative logistics and mobility solutions can be scaled and replicated across Europe.
